I-465 circles Indianapolis for 53 miles, and nearly everyone in the metro uses it. It meets every interstate that enters the city and carries a steady mix of commuters, semis and out-of-town drivers hunting for their exit. Most of the loop is in Marion County, with short stretches crossing into Boone and Hamilton counties on the north side.

What makes I-465 tough

  • Interchange after interchange. I-65, I-69, I-70 and I-74 all meet the loop, and drivers change lanes late to make an exit.
  • Two routes on one road. I-74 shares the road with I-465 around the south half of the loop, from exit 16 near Speedway to exit 49 on the southeast side, so signs show two route numbers and visitors get confused.
  • A new southwest interchange. The I-69/I-465 interchange (exit 5) opened in August 2024 as part of the I-69 Finish Line. Some drivers still approach it with old habits.
  • Heavy truck traffic, especially on the west and south sides near the airport and warehouses.
  • Sudden backups. One stalled car can stack traffic up for miles and trigger rear-end chain reactions.

Who handles crashes on I-465

Usually the Indiana State Police. IMPD or local departments may respond depending on location. The agency on your report decides where you request a copy. See getting a crash report.

If you're hurt on I-465

  • If your car can move, get to the shoulder or the next exit. If it can't, stay buckled with flashers on and call 911.
  • Indiana's move over law (IC 9-21-8-35) requires drivers to change lanes or slow down for stopped emergency vehicles, but not everyone does. Be careful getting out.
  • Note the nearest exit number or mile marker. It pins down where the crash happened.
  • If a semi was involved, see truck accidents.
